If your home’s electricity consumption exceeds the output power of the generator, it is easy for the generator to trip.
You can connect the portable generator to your home through a conversion switch. This method is not as portable as using backup generators with automatic transfer switches, but it still makes things simpler. Various specifications of manual transfer switch components can be purchased. You need to turn on and off the generator yourself. You must also manually switch the mains power to the generator before switching the circuit. However, the existing power sockets and wiring lights at home can be easily used. When using extension cords, only table lamps that are plugged into sockets can be used.
If the power of the generator is greater than or equal to 5KW, you should consider using a conversion switch. Even so, you can only use very few lines. Portable generators cannot be used to power the entire house. Even the largest portable generator can provide all the electricity you need. The advantage of using a portable generator as a backup power source for home use is that you can also use it for other purposes, such as camping.
The purchase of a basic conversion switch (Reliance Control TF151W) will cost approximately a few hundred yuan. However, you are more likely to need a complete set of devices to provide auxiliary circuit breakers for the generator. Depending on the number of circuits you require, you may need to pay high-end converters ranging from 1600 to 2500 yuan. Larger generators can handle more circuits, therefore requiring larger switching devices. You also need to consider the installation cost. The toolkit can be equipped with all necessary plugs and wiring, but you also need a qualified electrician to install it for you. Due to the direct connection of the transfer switch to the residential circuit, it must comply with specific regulations.
