StartUp Health Festival Day 1 Recap
Jill Biden and Bernard Tyson share the stage with hundreds of health innovators as they recommit to achieving audacious health moonshots.
It’s half-time at the 7th annual StartUp Health Festival. Day 1 of our 2019 Health Transformer gathering has come and gone, and the energy in the air here in San Francisco is electric. So many highlights from this day of digital health innovation, but we’ll keep it to the best moonshot moments.
Biggest. Festival. Yet.
The first StartUp Health “Festival” in 2011 was a modest meeting over coffee in San Francisco’s Union Square. That year, the idea was planted: meet during JP Morgan Week to recommit each year to Health Moonshots, and each year, bring a larger community back. The vision struck a chord with health innovators around the world, and today, thousands (almost 2K) of Health Transformers showed up to sound off about what they are doing to achieve audacious Health Moonshots. And we’re proud to say: our global army of change makers boasts the highest percentage of women presenters/leaders represented on the main stage of any event during JP Morgan Week here in San Francisco. #FutureIsFemale. Today, in affirming our dedication to achieving health moonshots, we declare that “we choose to go to the moon again.” Together we can achieve the impossible. #TogetherWeCan
StartUp Health Magazine Issue 3 Launch
They say good things come in threes, and the release of Issue 3 of the StartUp Health magazine is no exception. Across its 132-pages, we feature a deep dive into each health moonshot, declare our re-commitment to “go to the moon” to solve the world’s most challenging health problems, debut our 11th health moonshot, and… well, you’re just going to have to sign-up to receive your (free) copy to know the rest.

Dr. Jill Biden, Ed.D. Shares What’s Next for the Cancer Moonshot
Former Second Lady of the US and Co-Chair of the Biden Cancer Initiative, Dr. Jill Biden, Ed.D. shared from the mainstage what she believes is needed to cure cancer as we know it.
“If we stopped research entirely and never spent another dime on funding new cures, we could still save thousands of lives by doing one thing: breaking down the barriers in this movement and sharing the knowledge that already exists.”

Co-founders of Devoted Health and Brothers Todd + Ed Park Are Reshaping Elder Care
In addition to speaking candidly on working with family (hint: they love it), Todd and Ed Park, brothers and co-founders of Devoted Health, walked a packed room of Health Transformers through their company’s new “pay-vider” model. They started with a simple question: “Is healthcare today — confusing, expensive, impersonal — really the best we can do?”
“If you unlock the mojo of an amazing team of providers — essentially give them the freedom to care for everyone like their mom — what that team can do from that foundation is extraordinary.”
