#SHSL Organizer Bio Christy S. N. Butcher

The Startup Huddle St. Lucia Team under SLUDTERA, is pleased to introduce you to one of our members Christy S. N. Butcher.

Christy is a Certified Health Promotion Specialist previously employed as a Health Educator with the Ministry of Health in Saint Lucia, where she worked in various settings including schools, communities, workplaces and with multisectoral stakeholders. Whilst there, she developed a love for working with youth and soon became a focal point and national resource person in the areas of youth and sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Over time, Christy broadened her scope working with international organizations such as the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), and International Youth Alliance on Family Planning (IYAFP) to effectively address youth and SRH in her country.

Recognizing the key role of social factors as determinants of health, Christy has transitioned increasingly towards overall self-development and improvements in one’s quality of life as pathways to holistic health and well-being. She focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework to promote behaviour change and to create long-term impact and she has adopted social marketing and entrepreneurship as strategies to address the many social factors which pose barriers to good health among youth in her region.

Currently, Christy works independently and recently launched her entity, Writing Legends, a youth development social enterprise established to facilitate the expansion and implementation of youth-centric, global development initiatives for the benefit of youth in the Eastern Caribbean. This is achieved through partnerships with international entities towards provision of opportunities for education, innovation and donation in alignment with the realization of the SDGs agenda in the region.

Her flagship SDG initiative, Merit Eastern Caribbean, is the premiere regional council for World Merit, a global youth organization based in the UK, which rewards young people for local action towards achievement of the SDGs.

Writing Legends was developed following the recognized need for lucrative, yet impactful opportunities whereby young people in the region can be engaged. It acts as a conduit between global youth-centric initiatives and youth in the Eastern Caribbean. Through partnerships with various global organizations and movements, Writing Legends provides opportunities whereby young people can create meaningful impact, while actively developing themselves personally and professionally.

In addition to building Writing Legends, Christy remains engaged with various global youth organizations including the Commonwealth Youth Health Network for which she is a founding and Steering Committee member.

Chisty’s recent appointment of Regional Co-organizer on the Marketing Team of Startup Huddle St. Lucia, is a direct result of these accolades and achievements, in addition to being a member of the YLAI Network.
