#8 — Expect the unexpected

The reason why I loved the The Last Jedi so much is that it didn’t deliver on what I expected, but it gave me something way better. For two years I was reading every theory I can about Snoke, Rey’s Parents and more. My expectations were massive & I had lots of questions that needed answering. And then the story did exactly what I didn’t expect (and probably for many others too!). For some this might’ve been jarring, but for me, I loved it. I thrive on being challenged in these ways.

The same with the Resistance airing soon. I know within myself this show will pleasantly surprise us and give us lots of unexpected stories. Seeing Leia in these clips briefly, already blew me away. I knew she likely would’ve been part of this show, but finally seeing it made me even more excited.

In any case, I love being surprised and Star Wars never disappoints. This week’s issue is all about expectations (and the unexpected!). Enjoy!

First Look: Team Fireball

Yay, more Resistance details. In this video we get some great background info on new characters of Team Fireball. Also, lots more shots & clips to tease us. This animation style is totally growing on me! And mostly, I love that they are going with a more childlike fun adventure approach to this series. When I watched this featurette, it totally reminded me of being a kid again, watching cartoons on TV. There’s that excitement of just pure fun. And I’m positively giddy for it!

Check out both those links for more details on the show. For example, this really great shot of Leia!

Also, we finally have it confirmed, Resistance will start off 6 months before the events of The Force Awakens. Much closer than I expected, but this is a welcome surprise! Excited for more world building in the sequel trilogy era.

How TLJ Defies Expectations

I’m a huge fan of Jonathan from Pop Culture Detective. His video essays dig into popular culture and its overlap with masculinity. Every video leaves me with lots to think about. It’s always a delight when he brings out a Star Wars focused video.

This time around he focuses on how The Last Jedi defied expectations by having three male characters, Poe, Finn & Luke, being taught lessons by women. There’s a lot of discussion around tropes and unconscious bias through which we expect masculine hero arcs should lead. It’s highly insightful and challenges me in great ways!

Amazing video & amazing thoughts. Thanks Jonathan!

Heroes & Villians

Speaking of hero arcs, it’s no secret that Luke’s journey was based on the Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell. Charlotte & Caitlin give us a great introduction into this archetype along with many other hero & villain journeys. They bring it back to Star Wars and how this has all played out & could play out for Episode IX. So what should we expect? Let’s wait & see!

P.S. — Totally listen to this if you want to get a huge knowledge boost on storytelling. I’ve added lots of book recommendations from this already.

Kylo’s First & Last Appearances in The Last Jedi

Well here’s an interesting find for you. The first & last scenes of Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi seem to have some surprising parallels. I love that people are still finding interesting details in The Last Jedi.

Do you think these parallels mean anything, or just really great visual storytelling? In any case, a nice detail to look out for on your next rewatch!
