Interesting! My take on car safety designers this is that this isn’t because they ignored race — in my mind it sounds like they were blind that they were only paying attention to one race and the male gender. If car safety designers had genuinely been not-racist and not-sexist, they would have designed for people in general, which involves paying attention to how bodies vary from each other. The same issue about the assumption that the default race is white, applies to models and military armour, and even Proper Cloth’s algorithm, which seemed to already favour ‘caucasians’ soon after its ‘birth’. But yes, then it gets into whether this constitutes ignoring or incorporating ethnicity. Two routes, same destination?
