The Ted Talk talks about how the country after being independent in 1956 invest about 20% in education where the president at the time invested in free and high quality education for everyone in the country.

As an establish fact, learning rather than education has become a bigger crisis as many are being educated however more 30 million children who are in getting an education in schools are failing to ‘learn’. The Ted Talk explains us how big the crisis is — by 2030, half of the world’s children and youth will be out of school or failing to learn.

This brings us to that fact that instead of focusing on the word ‘schooling’ countries, like Pakistan need to focus on the word ‘learning’ — where at least the ones who are getting an education are at least learned and intellectual. Trying to figure out how this problem can be catered Amel Karboul suggest that every child can be able to ‘learn’ by the best in class and this can be implement in the entire world by the gap of 1 generation.

To see how this worked, they looked at all the income levels in different countries and learnt from the best in class. Giving an example of Vietnam and Tunisia — she goes on to stating that Vietnam introduced a standardized assessment for literacy and numeracy, and made sure teachers were monitored better in comparison to other countries. She went on to stating that student’s achievement in Vietnam were made public and eventually the results of PISA show that Vietnam outperformed many countries.

As per research, it shows that many countries don’t follow that — they do not make their students achievements public. Here the question arises if student’s results aren’t made public, teachers wouldn’t focus their attention on delivering results.

This brings us to the main issue that even if countries are investing in education but aren’t investing in making the education system deliver results, its only schooling children but not focusing on their learning. His in effect devalues education and the education system would remain broken.

In Pakistan, we face the same issue. More focus should be on giving quality education and should be more result oriented rather than constantly establishing schools rather Ghost School with no teachers — or teachers with minimum education.

Learning Generation, is being made a reality that needs to be brought to Pakistan as well. The two initiative to making Learning Generation a reality includes The Pioneer Country Initiative — which includes over 20 countries from Asia and Africa and are committed to making education a priority and to transform their education systems to deliver results. The initiative encourages the delivery approach — which is done in two ways; first being giving the teachers and relevant parties the knowledge on the initiative and second being constant follow up.
