PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2018

Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, abbreviated as PES 2018, is a sports video game created and published by Konami for platforms including Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Android, and iOS. Released globally in September 2017, it marks the 17th installment in the Pro Evolution Soccer series. Notably, it serves as the final PES game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, featuring licenses for UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and the Borussia Dortmund partnership.

Development

A mobile iteration, PES 2018 Mobile, was launched for iOS and Android, achieving over 150 million downloads by August 2018. PES 2018 was succeeded by Pro Evolution Soccer 2019.

In terms of development, Konami introduced a “Barcelona Edition” and pre-order bonuses for both digital and physical versions. Licensed teams included Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, FC Schalke 04, Valencia, Fulham, and the Brazil national football team. The France national football team license was confirmed during the online beta.

The demo version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 was released on August 30, 2017, for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, featuring limited content. Although no Nintendo Switch version was developed, Konami expressed openness to the idea for future releases.

Data packs were introduced, with Data Pack 1 launching on October 5, 2017, and Data Pack 2 on November 15, 2017. These updates brought new player face updates, boots, stadiums, and player thumbnails. However, Data Pack 2.0 also removed licenses for certain teams, replacing them with generic players.

Commercial performance

PES 2018 brought improvements to ball intelligence, player positioning, and winger overlaps. G-cluster announced innovations in facial identification for players.

Critical reception for PES 2018 was generally favorable, with an aggregate score of 81/100 on PC, 83/100 on PS4, and 82/100 on Xbox One according to Metacritic. IGN praised the game as “amazing,” giving it a score of 9.2/10, while GameSpot labeled it “the most satisfying football game ever made,” with an 8/10 rating.

Commercially, PES 2018 sold 64,342 copies on PlayStation 4 in its first week in Japan, topping the all-format sales chart. PES 2018 Mobile exceeded 150 million downloads by August 2018, with impressive revenue figures during May–July 2018.

The game received accolades, including “Best Sports Game” at the Gamescom 2017 Awards and recognition on Eurogamer’s “Top 50 Games of 2017” list. It was also nominated for various awards such as “Best Multiplayer Game” at the 35th Golden Joystick Awards and “Best Sports/Driving Game” at the Titanium Awards.
