Less than a year after The Walking Dead series finale, the popular AMC show’s next spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City, is finally airing, but the first season’s episode count is low for a standard television series. The spinoff picks up many years after the parent show’s series finale and focuses on Negan Smith, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Maggie Greene, played by Lauren Cohan. The show begins with Negan and Maggie venturing to post-apocalyptic New York City to search for Maggie’s son, Hershel, who has been kidnapped.

When The Walking Dead: Dead City was first announced, it was surprising to hear that the show would focus on Negan and Maggie since Negan killed Maggie’s husband in the original series. Even though season 11 ended with the two calling a truce, their relationship was still turbulent, given their history. However, conflict makes for good television shows, and perhaps The Walked Dead: Dead City will surprise everyone. Unfortunately, the spinoff only has a limited number of episodes, so it has little time to impress the audience.

The Walking Dead: Dead City Has 5 Episodes Left

Following The Walking Dead: Dead City series premiere on Sunday, June 18, five episodes remain. That’s right — there are only six episodes in the spinoff’s first season. The good news is that there are plenty of other The Walking Dead spinoffs to look forward to following the conclusion of The Walking Dead: Dead City, including The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne.

The remaining five episodes of The Walking Dead: Dead City will continue to air on Sundays, with no breaks in between. Episode 2, “Who’s There?,” drops on June 25, followed by episode 3, “People Are a Resource,” on July 2, episode 4, “Everybody Wins a Prize,” on July 9, episode 5, “Stories We Tell Ourselves,” on July 16, and the finale, “Doma Smo,” on July 23. Perhaps, if the series performs well for AMC, the network will renew The Walking Dead: Dead City for a second season. Related: Why Dead City Looks So Different From The Walking Dead

Why The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1 Is So Short

There’s a reasonable explanation for why The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1 only contains six episodes — AMC said so. What it all comes down to is that the network wanted to focus on quality over quantity, something that was lost in The Walking Dead’s later seasons. Plus, the television world in 2023 is a lot different from what it was ten years ago. Twenty-two-episode seasons that air from September to May are becoming more uncommon, while ten-episode seasons that drop all at once are more popular. So, it makes sense why AMC cut down on The Walking Dead: Dead City’s episode count.
