as late as Gulf War we still had 175mm and 203mm(8") self propelled guns (175mm had ~40km range) but I guess MLRS et al was supposed to supplant all that because it was supposed to be “more efficient” (and justifies completely new systems). I wonder what the cost trade is in terms of pounds of explosive on target/operating dollar though.
