Josef Hueber, an eminent architect and Enlightenment master builder from Austria, used design philosophy to create the beautiful Admont Abbey Library, the world’s largest library monastery. The Benedictine Monastery of Admont Abbey was founded in the 11th century. With its remarkable frescoes in the dome, the late Baroque-style library hall commissioned by the abbot Matthäus Offner (mandate: 1751–1779) was finally completed in 1776.A devastating fire destroyed practically the whole monastery on April 27, 1865. The library may be spared while the monastic archives destroyed.

After the fire in 1865, architect Wilhelm Bücher created the current church to replace the previous one. It was the first sacred edifice in Austria to be built in the neo-Gothic style, and it was inspired by Regensburg Cathedral. It includes a pair of 12th-century Romanesque side doors. The two west towers stand 67 meters tall, with images of St. Benedict and St. Scholastic adorning the front. At the top of the west door is a statue of Saint Blaise, the church’s patron saint.A center nave and two side aisles, each with five side chapels and six altars, make up the interior. Martino Altomonte (1657–1745) painted Mary Immaculate on the altar, which is encircled by 15 medallions carved with the Stammel rosary secrets. Both paintings were painted in 1726 and survived the fire of 1856.
