The “round gardens,” which are actually oval, are located in the Naerum suburban area of Copenhagen, Denmark. They are one of the most visually stunning allotment gardens in the world.Sren Carl Theodor Marius Srensen is widely regarded as one of the best landscape architects of all time, and one of his most famous works is the oval gardens of Naerum. In 1948, 40 oval allotment gardens, each measuring roughly 25 x 15 metres, were built out on a rolling grass, sandwiched between public homes and more typical allotments. Owners were free to place their cottages, choose the surrounding hedges, and lay out the interior of their plots, but Srensen supplied some guidelines, emphasising that they were meant to be guidelines rather than rules.The oval gardens of Naerum are still one of the most stunning attractions in the Danish capital, even after seven centuries.

Initially, Srensen envisioned the landscaping project as a regular grid of ovals scattered throughout the lawn, but this was subsequently replaced with a more dynamic aesthetic and a looser arrangement of the plots. Despite the freedom of design that each garden plot owner has had over the years, the oval gardens have always maintained a certain uniformity in some aspects, such as the preference for clipped hedges over unclipped hedges, which has contributed to the gardens’ beauty.One of the most striking…
