Les Espaces d’Abraxas is a high-rise residential building in Noisy-le-Grand, about 12 kilometers from Paris. The building was created for the French government in 1978 by architect Ricardo Bofill and his architectural firm Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura (RBTA), during a period of growing urbanization in France following World War II. In the French capital, Paris, this rapid urbanization has resulted in overpopulation and a lack of housing. To make up for it, the French government has launched a plan to build five “New Cities” on the outskirts of Paris. The structures’ post-modern architecture incorporates traditional themes and cutting-edge construction techniques to achieve a sumptuous appearance formerly reserved for the upper crust. Despite some criticism, Ricardo Bofill’s building was an early success, bringing him international fame and acclaim.The massive 591-apartment building was built in 1982 after being conceived in 1978. It immediately became a cultural symbol, thanks to its use as a backdrop in films and music videos. It is made up of three structures: the largest is Le Palacio (the palace), followed by Le Théâtre (theatre) to the west, and the smallest is L’Arc (arch) between the two.
