The American Radiator Building is an early skyscraper located 40 West 40th Street in New York City’s Midtown Manhattan area, just south of Bryant Park. It was designed for the American Radiator Company by Raymond Hood and Andre Fouilhoux in the Gothic and Art Deco styles. In 1924, the first phase of the American Radiator building, a 23-story skyscraper, was completed. Between 1936 and 1937, a five-story extension was built west of the original tower.The original edifice has an eighteen-story tower rising over a five-story base, whereas the western extension only has five floors. The American Radiator building’s exterior is mostly built of black brick. The golden ornaments are employed on the building’s failures and tops. Hood planned the original construction to be a stand-alone well, which necessitated its removal from the lot line and a reduction in the amount of available area. The basement, first, and second floors were built as exhibition halls, while the top floors were constructed as office space.From 2001 until 2009, the annex housed the Katharine Gibbs School before becoming Guttman Community College at City University of New York in 2012. The American Radiator Building is a National Register of Historic Places-listed landmark in New York City.Raymond Hood and J.
