The Diatlov Incident refers to the death under mysterious circumstances of a group of tourists led by Igor Diatlov — an event that is believed to have happened on the night of February 1–2, 1959 in the northern Ural Mountains. The death of the group of tourists (skiers) led by Diatlov continues to attract the attention of researchers, journalists and politicians, being discussed even 50 years later on the central media channels of the Russian Federation. The incident took place in the Sverdlovsk Region, near the Holat Cyahil mountain in the area inhabited by the Mansi tribe, in the pass that will be named Diatlov in memory of this tragic event. The group, led by Igor Diatlov, consisted of eight men and two women, most of whom were students or graduates of the Ural Polytechnic Institute (now Ural State Technical University).
The lack of eyewitnesses has led to much speculation. Soviet investigators simply determined that “an overwhelming natural force” caused the death. Access to the area by skiers and other adventurers was prohibited for three years after this incident. The exact chronology of the incident remains unclear due to the lack of survivors.
Investigators determined that the hikers tore open their tent from the inside, walking barefoot through the snow in temperatures of -30°C. The hasty departure in the dark would have been caused by the appearance of a bright light according to some sources. Although the bodies showed…
