What You Can Do About It Today

We’ve all been there. We set a goal, get super motivated about it, and then we fail to achieve it.

Either we get too busy, lose our focus, or give up altogether. No matter what the reason is, it’s a horrible feeling when it happens.

Goals give us a reason to keep moving forward, despite the obstacles that stand in our way of success. They give us a long-term vision for what we want our life to look like.

As Geoffry Abert says, “The most important thing about goals is having them.”

In short, goals are super important.

What are the consequences of achieving one’s goals? Well, research shows that professors get tenure faster, employees get larger raises, and even students learn up to 250% faster when goals are set for them.

I am addicted to setting and achieving my goals. So much so, that I publicly share them with the world on a regular basis.

The research speaks for itself — people who set goals are more successful in life.

When it comes to goal setting, EVERYONE wants to achieve them but unfortunately most do not. A study by Scranton University found that as many as 92% of people who set New Year resolutions fail to achieve them.

If you are a part of the majority, it’s time to figure out what is preventing you from taking action.

Actions always speak louder than words.

“You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.”
― C.G. Jung

What interests me is why we fail. If we want something so bad, then why do we throw in the towel so easily and give up?

Let’s explore 3 reasons why you aren’t crushing your goals.

1. Fear of Failure

Some people are so afraid of failing or succeeding that they never even set a goal. This stems from a lack of belief in themselves and their abilities.

Their inner critic tells them that they don’t have what it takes to succeed, so they don’t. Similarly, if they do succeed, they think that everyone will look down on them with envy.

No matter what decision they make, they are setting themselves up for failure from the start.

Maybe our fear isn’t that we fail, but that we will be so successful that we won’t know what to do with it all. As Nelson Mandela once said in a1994 Inaugural Address:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are weak. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”

You can achieve anything that you set your mind to, but it all starts and ends with you. Believe in yourself and trust that you are capable of achieving whatever it is that you set out to do.

2. Lack of Motivation

Everyone experiences moments in their lives when their motivation is at an all-time low. In this place, the last thing that you want to do is work on your goals.

In order for us to get motivated to achieve anything, our goals need to excite us. If your goals don’t make you feel alive inside, it’s time to set new goals.

Tony Robbins once said,

“People are not lazy. They simply have impotent goals — that is, goals that do not inspire them.”

Research shows that you only get a certain amount of willpower on any given day. Once you’ve exhausted that supply, you will find it harder to stay motivated as time goes on.

This is why I am a big believer in creating a morning ritual.

By sticking to a set routine, I am able to minimize the number of decisions that I have to make. As a result, I have more energy to achieve my goals and crush my day.

A great way to make your goals more motivating is to tap into the emotions associated with them. What is your why? What do you want, so badly, that you would do anything to achieve it?

Let your why be the fuel that keeps your momentum going, even during moments when you feel like giving up.

3. Lack of Patience

You can’t expect to set a goal and magically expect it to happen overnight. A lot of people lack patience.

When they don’t see results right away, they quit. They think that it must be a sign that the goal either isn’t right or isn’t achievable.

Achieving success takes patience and persistence. Do you have these traits?

Patience is closely tied to commitment and self-discipline. It takes a lot of inner strength not to give up when you can’t see the light.

Quitting is easy, but that’s not what winners do. Commit to keep going, no matter how many times you fall. I promise that the payoff will be sweet.

“Patience, persistence, and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.” Napoleon Hill

When the going gets tough, reach higher. Are you ready to crush your goals?
