Morning thoughts: Sound the alarm! “Cord-cutters” and “cord-nevers” are coming
ESPN is doomed, apparently.
The company, majority owned by Walt Disney Co., has lost 3.2 million subscribers in a little over a year, according to Nielsen data, as people have “cut the cord”.
It’s not necessarily the “cord-cutters,” but it’s the “cord-nevers” who are key. It’s the kids who have never and will never subscribe to cable television.
I understand how amusing it is to watch a media behemoth fall down, but it shouldn’t surprise us. Reports and in-depth articles on the future of the media industry are constantly sounding the alarm: “Change is coming.”
It’s not. It’s here. It’s been here for a while and won’t go away any time soon. Accept it and move on. Fast.
Technology is the main driver behind the media and entertainment industry. It has always been. As long as technology changes the business of selling content will do too.
Instead of longing for a glorious past that never was, let’s prepare for what’s next. Say hello to Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Wearables!
Enjoy the ride!
