Bad Ideas: “IP Broadcast”
You know, there are some ideas that work. A TCP/IP connection is such a thing. It’s like a phone line. You say “I want to talk to 188.8.131.52", you pick up the phone and 184.108.40.206 talks to you. I use this all the time; all of JavaX is built using TCP. Yes, we need to free TCP from firewalls: But otherwise — yeah it’s a good thing.
Not so with TCP/UDP “broadcasts”. After some consideration, I think this feature is completely useless.
Broadcasts are poorly documented and totally unclear in their applicability. Can I broadcast to one single machine? One LAN? The whole Internet?
As I said, I think it’s useless. Let’s find a proper way to broadcast.
