What We Can Learn from Odysseus’ Unconventional Reaction to War
Odysseus’ story begins with the Trojan War, which is said to have lasted for ten years. Agamemnon, the great hegemon of the Greeks, asked Odysseus to join the war and lead the Greek forces against Troy. However, Odysseus was hesitant to accept Agamemnon’s request. He had just become a father
and didn’t want to miss out on his son’s early years. He also knew that the war would take a long time to end and that Agamemnon’s real motives were questionable.
However, Odysseus had taken an oath to go to war when asked, so he couldn’t outright refuse. Instead, he came up with a plan to avoid the war. That plan would go down in history as the first- ever in Hellenic history to plead insanity in order to avoid engaging in warfare .
Odysseus’s Cunning Plan
He pretended to be insane by tying a horse and an ox to his plow, putting a crazy cap on his head, and pouring salt into the furrow instead of seed. Despite his best efforts, Agamemnon sent Palamedes, one of the wisest men of his time, to make sure that Odysseus would join the war.
Palamedes played along with Odysseus act at the beginning, but at the end he snatched Odysseus’ newborn son Telemachus from Penelope’s bosom and drew his sword as if he would kill him. Odysseus in his fear for the child confessed that his madness was pretended and he went to the war.
Despite his reluctance, Odysseus became a valuable asset to the Greek forces, thanks to his cunning intellect and resourcefulness. He used his skills to aid the Greeks in various ways and contributed to the war effort.
Lessons from Odysseus’ Story
Odysseus’ story teaches us several valuable lessons. First, it shows us the importance of being resourceful and adaptable. Despite his initial reluctance to join the war, Odysseus became a valuable asset to the Greek forces, thanks to his cunning intellect and resourcefulness.
His contributions to the war effort are well documented in the epic poem of the Iliad, written by Homer.
He helped the Greeks gain entry into Troy by coming up with the idea of the Trojan Horse, a huge wooden horse that was presented to the Trojans as a gift. Unbeknownst to the Trojans, Greek soldiers were hidden inside the horse, and when the Trojans brought it into their city, the soldiers emerged and opened the gates, allowing the Greek army to enter and capture Troy.
Second, it teaches us that sometimes, we have to put aside our personal desires and obligations for the greater good. Odysseus had to leave his family and home to fight for his country, even though it meant sacrificing 20 years of his life.
Odysseus’ story is a timeless tale that teaches us valuable lessons about leadership, resourcefulness, and integrity. His unconventional reaction to war may have seemed foolish at first, but it ultimately led to his success on the battlefield. By following in Odysseus’ footsteps, we can learn to be better leaders and make a positive impact in our own lives and the lives of others.
