I like to build things with software and I use many tools to draft ideas, code, host things, etc as part of the process. Today I decided to have a look at the things I used and how much I spend on it.

Disclaimer: I used to work for Atlassian and still own shares with them.

  • Writing down ideas: Google Drive (Free with my personal Gmail)
  • Design: Sketch ($99)
  • Repositories hosting: Bitbucket (Unlimited private repos for Free)
  • Coding: Sublime Text 3 ($70)
  • CI/CD/Automation: Bitbucket Pipelines (50 mins / month for free)
  • Domain name: Hover ($13/year for .com)
  • Email management: GSuite ($5/user/month)
  • Static website with https: Jekyll or Hugo + Netlify (Free)
  • Analytics: Google Analytics (Free)
  • Application hosting: Heroku (Free is enough for pet projects) or Digital Ocean ($5/month)
  • Mobile app publishing: Apple Developer Program ($99/year) & Android Developer Program ($25)

So now let’s do some maths on that.

Fixed cost for all projects: $194 (Sketch + Sublime Text 3 + Android dev programme) + $99/year (Apple developer program)

Cost per project: $73 to $133/year (Domain name + emails + hosting)

If you’re reading this please feel free to share alternatives in the comments as I’d be really keen to know other stuff.
