If they just got rid of the individual mandate they could lower premiums with greater elasticity of demand. I keep reading how the market would crash without the mandate but nobody explains the mechanism in which that happens. I think it would create more competition among insurers and more incentives to offer better packages. If everyone has to buy insurance then the companies can easily keep premiums up.
