I really appreciate this connection Baker-Fletcher makes between witnessing the remains of Emmett Till and the cross because it seems to be both a conviction of ignorance as well as a call to action. I can only imagine the profound level of denial and dissociation going on as massive crowds of people watched Jesus being tortured and humiliated. If they truly witnessed the utter injustice and violence, they would be motified (or at least I hope). Mamie Mobley-Till’s cry to “look!” truly captures this plead for people to open their eyes to the tragedy before them, see the person who has been objectified and dehumanized, and take responsibility for the harm they have caused or have been subjected to. Very powerful!
