Lecture Notes — Interview Questions

Six Question Types:

  1. Open-ended questions

~ Allows someone to respond in their own way and include an explanation.

2. Close-ended

~ Very short answers, usually “yes” or “no”.

~ There are times when it is more appropriate to ask a close-ended question or an open-ended question.

3. Hypothetical Questions

~ When you set up a situation that could occur and have the person respond with what they would do in a situation.

~ Typically stay away from hypothetical questions.

4. Agree/Disagree Question

~ Not used very frequently.

5. Probing Question

~ Follow-up to something that has already been said.

~ If…, then…

~ Two-part question

6. Personal Question

~ Difficult to ask

~ Touches on subject’s personal life

~ Carefully place these in line of questions

~ Build a trust relationship first and then ask the more personal questions

~ Leave these questions for the middle or the end of the interview
