Ah, baseball. Nothing could lift the spirits of Americans now more than America’s pastime. As the great Walt Whitman once said, “It’s our game…America’s game; it has the snap, go, fling of the American atmosphere; it belongs as much to our institutions, fits into them as significantly as our Constitution’s laws…” And for many women, baseball is also about how snugly players fit into their pinstriped pants, NAH MEAN.

Unfortunately, nothing could spread the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, faster than a stadium full of sick baseball fans coughing Bud Light onto their neighbors’ shoulders. Major League Baseball has postponed Opening Day and won’t start games until June at the very earliest. There’s even some bonkers talk about all 29 MLB teams playing in Arizona to empty stadiums, with players huddled up in hotel rooms between games. Why didn’t I ever get to go to that summer camp?

But unfortunately the hits keep coming, with women ballplayers possibly the hardest hit. The NCAA has canceled spring championships, shutting down the immensely popular college softball world series. The USA softball team was returning to the Olympics for the first
