“Because I am a girl” is not an apologia for anything! Funny-but-sad, there is a bankrupt and dim notion that there should be a limit to what a girl should aim towards and achieve on an audacious scale. Furthermore, that she was created primarily to be beautiful and attractive for the ‘male folks’ (quite depressing). Even more depressing, many girls have accepted this shallow notion.
I told a friend of mine that I aspire to win a Nobel Prize in Medicine, but she quickly rebuffed with this egregious statement: “Don’t you know you are a girl?” you don’t have to be ‘too ambitious’, so that you won’t scare men away and remain a spinster. I was deeply offended but mostly saddened.
The point simply is “A girl is a human being with a brain” which she can utilize to identify societal problems (could be in the field of engineering, medicine, politics or even all) and solve them. If she wants to manufacture ‘flying-cars’, as weird as it may sound, she shouldn’t be discouraged! If she wants to reform a sickle cell to become normal, she shouldn’t be discouraged. If she wants to be a pilot or engineer, she shouldn’t be discouraged (professions should always be gender-neutral). I would have agreed to the claim that a girl should not be ‘too ambitious’ if scientists can discover any disparity between the male and female brain(no discovery yet, still waiting…)
Girls should please reject the language of ‘don’t be too ambitious' and see themselves as ‘human beings with a brain' capable of achieving anything!
Being a girl or a boy is a thing of gender difference, nothing more! nothing less!!
