How Artificial Intelligence is Changing the Medical World as We Know It

A look into how Artificial Intelligence is expanding our medical knowledge and becoming more personalized with each patient.

Over the years, the advancements in artificial intelligence have been tremendous. Our need for technology is only continuing to grow every day. We see A.I. in our homes, our work, and of course in the mobile devices we use everyday. But how will A.I. change the medical world?

What Can We Expect in the Future

For some, the advancement of A.I. into the medical world is quite unsettling. Patients rely on their doctors and physicians to get the proper medical care and handle any prescriptions they need. But what would happen when you lose that physical interaction?

The answer of course lies in the future. But many advancements with A.I. have already begun to take shape and are helping in more ways than we would expect.

As technology grows and changes, we are able to learn more about the world and discover things that were once unknown such as genetic coding or DNA modifications. With such large amounts of new data being produced, it is almost necessary for A.I. to be used so we are able to store and track this data.

A New Generation of Patients

Consumers today are becoming more and more engaged in their own healthcare. The activity and fitness tracker craze was just the beginning. A survey taken in the UK estimates that approximately 82% of athletic people use fitness trackers to monitor their health.

Patients are eager to build their own health profiles and get more personalized service with everything they do. This creates a need for massive amounts of stored data and A.I. can help to manage and organize the data.

With A.I., the speed and accuracy of patient information and diagnoses will be increased tremendously. The possibilities for personalized medical treatments will greatly increase as well as creating a more efficient and reliable medical world. IBM Watson’s A.I. was able to cross-reference a patient’s conditions in 10 minutes and detect that she had leukaemia.

Personalization is key

There is so much medical data that exists for every person and having a system that is able to use that data to predict medical outcomes is the future. Can you imagine a system that is able to know before you do, that you are going to become sick?

Pretty cool if you ask me! And it creates a complete essence of personalization.

Let’s explore some advancements that are happening today…

A Swiss company called Sophia Genetics has created collective A.I. for data driven medicine called Sophia. Sophia can read and aggregate the genetic code of DNA and predict and diagnose genetic diseases such as cancer. It also uses A.I. to combine that genome data with analysis, medical science, and expert opinion to create a diagnosis. This helps healthcare professionals personalize their patient’s treatment.

This artificial intelligence unit continuously analyzes the collected pool of DNA data sent to the company by 170 hospitals globally. In doing so, it improves its’ own ability to detect and diagnose genetic conditions.

“Sophia will constantly examine the genomic data of thousands of patients in our network and gradually teach itself to not only identify genomic diseases but to become more accurate in its diagnosis. This is the first time we have introduced machine learning into our operation,” said Jurgi Camblong, CEO and co-founder of Sophia Genetics.
“As it constantly learns, it will vastly improve the speed and precision with which we can identify potentially life-threatening diseases, and allow us to diagnose many times more patients than we were able to previously”.

Having faster and larger amounts of data available to patients opens the doors for an entirely new medical future. Patients will be able to know sooner and faster about medical conditions they may have and find the best treatment options there are. It is still a field that will need perfecting but until that day A.I. can vastly help to make a more personalized world for everyone.
