How to present the case for equality under the law was being tip-toed around, because if it wasn’t addressed in a manner that allied the southern colonies, the attempt to dissolve the ties with the British Empire would never happen. The rewrites had to be agreed upon by Jefferson, Adams and Franklin in concert. I believe looking at the back and forth between the three that perfect was never the outcome that they sought. What they wanted was an effort to constantly become better and not wait until things got so bad that the change they saw as a necessity to governance led to a war against or within that dissolved the Union. You could say the appeasement almost led to that outcome. It was a prisoners dilemma.
