The Affair of Poisons under Louis XIV of France was the cause of many laws that banned witchcraft, magic and pagan practices. Those laws extend and were used as political tools thru the reign of Louis XV. I doubt that either actually believed in mysticism but used the fear of it to control the commons and dissent among the Royals.
