My Incredible Experience Attending Flatiron School NYC
My first day at Flatiron school, like any other first day of school, was a little nerve racking. I didn’t know what to expect, I felt underprepared, and was nervous about being judged for graduating Penn State University with a degree in economics. My initial expectation was that everyone else in the course would have prior experience in tech and had mastered the online pre-work. I had completed all the work, but did not have much confidence in my abilities and I began to second guess if I was making the right choice by attending the program. However, by the end of the first day all those uncertainties would become diminished.

By the end of the first day after getting a chance to speak to most of the people in my cohort, I realized that most of my classmates did not come from a tech background and were feeling a lot of the same things that I was. That was very reassuring especially for someone completely new to coding. My cohort developed a very close and strong relationship fairly quickly. My teachers even mentioned to me that they hadn’t seen a group come together like our cohort did in a very long time. That was the unique factor that set our cohort apart from the others while still contributing to the Flatiron community as a whole. Everyone in my cohort got along well with each other, which is such a rarity in any aspect of life. This allowed any individual to work incredibly well with any member of the class. We had many times where our groups for different assignments were randomized, and every time we finished I was amazed at the creativity and efficiency of everyones projects.

The community that Flatiron has created at the school is better than any other academic community I have ever been a part of. It didn’t matter if a student was in a different cohort or not because everyone at the school was willing to help each other to the best of their abilities. Everyone at Flatiron understands that to be truly successful you need to be able to work well with a team, and that strong sense of teamwork got me through a lot of times when I thought I was never going to be able to figure something out.

My cohorts sense of community goes beyond the classroom. Since I have completed the program, my cohort still gets together for drinks or just to brainstorm on new ideas. The connection we established will never die because of all the obstacles we had to overcome as a unit. My cohort was dubbed the name “Code-Blooded” and it brings me an immense amount of pride to have been a part of this team. Now when I look back at my time attending Flatiron, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to go. I love my cohort and am extremely thankful to all the teachers and fellow students who helped me along the way.
