Proofread Your Articles Out Loud Before Posting
Yesterday I started out by writing responses to other articles on Medium. One of my responses was to Tom Kuegler about his article on being a tutor. I either mistyped a word or was autocorrected by my iPad. I wrote “I don’t think being a tutor is write for me.” I meant to type “right” and didn’t realize my error until another Medium user highlighted my incorrect sentence.
That was not my only error yesterday that could have been prevented by proofreading before posting. I wrote a poem yesterday and put the wrong word in the title. The incorrect title was “Prelude To A Fart”. It would have made sense if I had been writing about all the uncomfortable feelings and body quirks leading up to a fart, but I wasn’t writing about that prelude. Later I corrected my title replacing Fart with Shit. This correction aligned my poem with the title, “Prelude To A Shit”.
So yesterday I felt like Homer Simpson having had two “D’oh!” moments. Sometimes when typing, especially on an iPad or other tablet, we get so caught up in what we are writing we forget to check our spelling before posting content. Our brains are thinking faster than our fingers are typing and sometimes our eyes glance over obvious spelling errors. And with the autocorrect feature, we may have gotten lazy. That is why it helps to read out loud what I and you have written before posting just to be sure that it says what we mean it to say.
Today, before writing this post, I read some other Medium articles. One by Valeria Black was about character archetypes. She had written “quiet” when she meant “quite” in one of her sentences about the character archetype she was writing about for her article. I highlighted the error, and commented to give her a heads up. Sometimes we need others to proofread our words because we still miss the errors.
So, proofread your article after you write it, proofread OUT LOUD a second time, have someone else proofread your article, and if all else fails, hopefully one of your readers will see the error, highlight it, and let you know so you can correct it.
