This article is an example of cod-vulgar-Marxist economism. It assumes that all questions ultimately boil down to money; but they don’t. Eg., hostility to immigration is increased by negative economic impacts, but it isn’t fundamentally -about- that. It’s about questions of identity. Foreigners make most people uncomfortable because they’re -foreign-; this is why the Japanese, against all formal economic logic, quietly refuse to allow influxes of foreign labor to their aging, shrinking population. Even the descendants of Japanese emigrants (from Brazil, for example) are regarded with extreme suspicion and quiet hostility.
