For Justin Keller
I wonder how Justin feels this morning.
“Tent City” was demolished yesterday. The homeless were forcibly evicted from the streets, under false pretenses.
But they are not gone.
An official said that a state of emergency should have been declared. But for whom? The homeless? Or for a city embarrassed that such conditions exist?A city that has little left but appearances. Form without substance. Shape without foundation.
During the exodus, at least one homeless, disabled veteran’s walker was taken from him by the police. A man who served his country in a way Justin will never know.
I think Justin feels he was a catalyst in positive change. He can go about his business today without being blinded by the harsh realities of the lives of those he cannot understand and refuses to try to comprehend.
The quality of Justin’s life has returned to its idealized state.
But nothing real has changed.
