Sierra Leone News: Former VP, KKY in Grant Alliance
By Stephen V. Lansana
The former Vice President Alhaji Sam Sumana and the erstwhile standard bearer aspirant of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Dr. Kandeh Yumkella have their representatives in the Grand Alliance, a senior member of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) party said on Saturday.
The Grand Alliance is a coalition of opposition parties that is geared towards defeating the All People’s Congress (APC) party in the 2018 elections.
A founding member and head of media of PMDC, Mr. Raymond Bamidele Thompson said that the friends of Sam Sumana, Coalition for Change (C4C) Movement and the representatives of KKY Movement have attended previous meeting of the Grand Alliance.
The Coalition for Change Movement is among the 13 movements that have expressed interest to register as political parties ahead of the 2018 elections.
He said that he expect Alhaji Sam Sumana and Dr. Kandeh Yumkella both to be part of the Coalition. “It is only an egoistic person that can think that he can win the forthcoming election by himself,” he said, adding that such coalitions have succeeded in changing regimes it most part of Africa, including The Gambia.
He said the Coalition is in its infancy stage, and that they are putting together the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will bind each member of the Coalition.
When asked about names of political parties that have shown interest in becoming member of the Coalition, he said he cannot name the parties now until they have shown commitment to the Coalition by signing the MOU. “It could be 24 parties in the Coalition against the APC,” he said.
He noted that the greater the number of political parties in the Coalition the better the chances for them to win the election with no runoff.
He said the coalition will be unveiled this month. “It is not too late. In The Gambia, it was formed in October and they contested the election in December.”
He said political parties do not have to wait until the Grand Alliance is formed before they will embark on their activities. He called on political parties to start working, so that their membership will increase. He said many political parties are willing to join the Coalition.
He made it clear that individuals are not allowed to join the alliance, adding that they could only support the Coalition. “The PPRC Act of 2002 only makes provision for political parties to come together.”
The east district Public Relations Officer of PMDC, Mamudu Barrie maintained that Former VP representing the eastern region, KKY representing the northern region, and Lawyer C.F Margai representing the southern region will be a perfect representation in the forthcoming election. “They are the three wise men,” he said.
