Sierra Leone News: Transitional Management Team Takes over Operations of SSL

Government on July 11, 2017, inaugurated a transitional management team to oversee the operation of Statistics sierra Leone (SSL) until a new statistician general appointed.
The inauguration of the management came following the retirement of Mr. King Koroma, the then statistician general.
Minister of State, Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Alhaji Foday Mansaray said that World Bank is ready to uplift SSL. He said that the Bank wants to bring a package of US$ 5 million to support institutional development.
He said that the environment of SSL is not conducive as compared to statistics offices in other countries. “This place is not fit for people to be here anymore,” he said, adding that from 1961 when the building was constructed there is no improve on the structure. He explained that some rents for the offices in the regions have not been paid.
Mr Mansaray said that President Ernest Bai Koroma has agreed that the position of statistician general should be advertised. “No one will circumvent it,” he said.
He said that they have formed this internal management team for transparency. He said that there are people who are within SSL that usually destroy the character of their colleagues for selfish reasons at the expense of the institution.
He disclosed that they formed the management team because they noticed that there is an internal beefing within the institution. “Don’t let others to mislead you,” he said.
“This is the first time in the history of this institution we have resulted in creating an internal team because we have found out that there is internal beefing. King Koroma has served this institution and the nation as whole, so you have to appreciate him,” he said.
Andrew Bob Johnny, acting statistician general and chairman of the transitional team, said that the transitional team will be for the next four months. He explained that with the approval of the President and the Ministry, they have to setup a management committee to run the institution, while waiting for the President to appoint a new statistician general.
He explained that SSL has five directors that constituted the new management committee.
He admonished his co-workers to corporate with the transition team so that they will continue to produce credible data in the country. “We can only achieve our goals if we are united,” he said.
