Art and the Hijab Politick

This is probably naive — but I take wearing hijab as an indicator of faith, like the cross worn by Christians or the turban worn by Sikhs. It’s a claim to membership in a culture if not a specific community.

The trouble comes when wearing the garment is required as evidence of faith or membership. Faith of any kind always exceeds symbolism.
