Ideas for a DIY Brain Stimulation Project Utilizing EEG + Ultrasound in a Closed-Loop System
Can We Build Something Great?
I always am asking myself this question when it comes to spending time developing products.
Through the last 7 years, I have designed, and built a series of products that can enable people to stimulate their brain in predictable ways.
The fact of this biz, however, is that it’s riddled with challenges in a seemingly endless combinatorial chain. There are money challenges (it’s not cheap), there are regulatory challenges, there are software and hardware challenges, and there are people challenges.
Realizing just how many problems there are, I have had to do some soul searching recently.
“Is this something that I could grind on, work on, fail at, succeed at, and eventually die doing?
The answer I have found, is yes. Come hell or high water, I don’t see myself really loving life doing much else.”
So this is post is a call to arms.
Can We Build Brain Computer Interface For The Masses?
I am deeply and truly inspired by the people at OpenBCI, for their commitment to offering incredibly clever tools to people that love exploring the human brain.
Their Ultracortex system appears to be a nearly perfect platform for building a really great Brain Computer Interface system, and that’s what I intend to do.
I can practically see the system already in my minds eye.
A continuous feedback loop system, that uses EEG + Ultrasound to read and write to the human brain.
In terms of creating affordable Ultrasound systems that are focused on brain stimulation, this is an area where I have many years of experience.
My company, Berkeley Ultrasound, is an alumni of the world’s largest Hardware Tech Accelerator, HAX in Shenzhen, China.
I am currently working on an updated prototype to make use of the Ultracortex head unit, and allow it to hold Ultrasound transducers to do targeted stimulation.
Plus, it is possible to do multi-channel stimulation. The system I am working on right now could be 8 or 16 channels, and can be placed anywhere on the 10–20 EEG layout.
Can We Transcend Into A New Era of Human Consciousness?
Times are changing. That much is clear.
Where there are many who are pessimistic about humanity’s future… I hold an immense amount of Optimism for our collective future.
I see a world ahead where the human will is unleashed, and people are able to reclaim their own minds. A world where we can reclaim our own will, and harness the power of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
No doubt this will be a controversial time, but what great movement hasn’t been controversial?
No, more than ever, those in positions to make a change must work on asymmetrical technology that is capable of waging full scale war against the problems of our times.
Rather than complain, why not embrace the suck, and work on solutions?!
All human problems originate in our minds.

So why not go to the root?
