Polling Phone Notifications to Regain Control of Your Life

How to live your life with less anxiety.

If I feel a vibration in my pocket or hear a little ding, there is something in my mind that constantly says “check it”, “see who liked your most recent picture”, “see who messaged you.” When I do look at who messaged me, and I have work to do, it’s very hard for me to say “I’ll reply to them later.” I just feel bad and feel like I’m ignoring people. As the number of people I talked to increased, this turned out to be unsustainable and I got more and more anxious to the point where I couldn’t finish any work.

That’s why I turned off notifications for every single app I have.

Now I only see things as I want to see them. If I want to check my email, I check it when I have time. When I want to see who messaged me on Facebook Messenger, I open the app when it’s most convenient for me. I am no longer a slave of the “ding.”

The only notification I ever receive are WeChat notifications (for a special reason) and Phone Call notifications. So if someone wants to call me, they will be able to reach me immediately. Otherwise, they’ll have to wait until I’m free. I’ve been doing this for 9 months and it’s one of the best things I could have done.

Poll when you want to, don’t let apps call back to you.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
