Mining rigs are special computers ideal for contributed computing power to a block-chain network in exchange for rewards. E.g. Bitcoin Miners.

The blockchain and crypto currencies are growing in popularity and disrupting the legacy centralized financial systems of today. Crypto Currencies are powered by a community of people whom provide processing power to a crypto coin network in exchange for crypto coin rewards. These are Miners, and in this article we will discuss a shopping list to get started building your first mining rig. You may find it familiar to being a custom gaming PC with overkill graphics.

Mining Rig Shopping List

1. Motherboard: Where all computing components connect together. You want a mother board that can support multiple graphics cards.

E.g. https://goo.gl/S784MW

2. CPU: This is the brain of the computer that carries out instructions. Make sure it’s the same socket type to be compatible w/ your motherboard. Go with the cheapest CPU you can find like an Intel Pentium, Celeron, or an AMD FM2.

E.g. https://goo.gl/F1ZGc8

3. Memory — RAM: This is the active memory while the computer is on, since were not playing video games you don’t need anything more than 4 GB of RAM. Make sure you get the right RAM generation for your motherboard (DDR3/ DDR4, etc…)

E.g. https://goo.gl/B7w9KB

4. Motherboard Switch: To turn your rig on/off.

E.g. https://goo.gl/NuLzpu

5. Drive w/ operating system: Install an operating system like Windows, OS X, or Linux to a hard drive. If you want to go cheaper booting your rig off a USB stick with Linux works wonders.

6. PSU (Power Supply): These generally come with all the cables you need to power your components. Pick a PSU that supports the amount of Watts your system uses. For example I have a rig with x 4 GTX 1070 graphics cards that use roughly 150w each w/ PCIE risers that use 50w each. With 800w to run just the GPUs I’m getting away with a 1000w PSU.

7a. GPU(s): Graphics processing unit (Graphic Cards) to do all the mining work. Cards that can get more than 10 MH/s are generally good. As far as profitability and what cards are best that’s for another article.

E.g. https://goo.gl/MXBH55

7b. GPU Risers: Since multiple GPUs just don’t fit well on motherboards using PCIE risers are like extension cords to solve this. They also allow you to plug into any PCIE port.

8. Keyboard, Mouse, Display: No need to go expensive.

9. Case: Conventional computer cases generally don’t work for mining because they’re not made to fit many graphics cards and all the cable management for them. A milk crate or DIY is most ideal.

Summary:

Motherboard, CPU, Motherboard Switch, RAM, Drive w/ OS, Power Supply, GPUs w/ risers, Keyboard/Mouse/Display

Note there are so many computer parts that all work. Stay tuned regarding articles on how I built my rig and what parts work best.
