As a Yankee who has lived in the south for several decades, I never really understood the almost deification of Lee, Jackson and such. Yes, it was history but I never recall in the north (outside of Gettysburg) statues of Grant, Meade or Sherman. Two of the 3 did get tanks named after them, and did their part in smashing fascists of a different era.

My hometown had a stature of a ww1 soldier. And a min statue of liberty. That was it, thought they later acquired a Stuart tank which was built there.

Maybe the Civil war monuments could be replace by local WW1 or WW2 heros. Given the size and meaning of those conflicts, they should not be hard to find.
