Good points. your point on “The right place, at the right time and know the right people” was spot on. People need to grasp that simple concept (you apparently get it). I’ve missed out on “perfect” jobs simply because they had just recently filled the job by the time I was aware of it. You just suck it up and move on.

That said, hard work does pay off in the long run. Impostors may be able to BS their way up the ladder to a degree, but lacking basic competence will catch up to them eventually (the Peter Principle in action). But a record of solid accomplishments will help one to grow their career.

But you also need to manage your expectations. Not everyone get to be senior management. Our company has 300 employees, and there are three I consider to be “senior managers”. The One percent is limited to just one percent.
