Microsoft work is a perfect example of this. There is absolutely nothing that has been added since the late 90’s that has improved it to the point that I need to keep purchasing it again and again. I have a copy of Office 2007 on my home computer, it how has live in three bodies and still works just fine. For the type of work I do at home there is no reason on earth I would need to upgrade.

The Office 365 is $70/yr vs $149 for Office 2106. So, in 2017 dollars I would have spent $700 vs $149. No wonder Microsoft executives can fund their own personal space programs.

That also explains with driverless cars that some feel the model will move to an Uber-based system when you don’t need the “headaches” of ownership, just keep paying rent to someone else so they can live on a private island.
