Paul Groepler wonders “why the rush to self-driving cars”. He must know different people than I do. Most folks I know don’t like to drive; they do it because it’s the most efficient way to get from Point A to Point B and they live someplace where efficient mass transit does not/will not exist.
Based on the number of accidents caused by inattention to road conditions (phone use, engrossed in conversation, cleaning up spilled food, etc.) I’d say the great majority of American drivers (at least) would be happier chatting, texting, reading, applying makeup, eating, etc., and leaving the actual management of the car to someone/something else.
