Knowledge plays a part in everything we do. It can help you make more money, make better decisions, be better at sports, take better care of your health and much more.

In fact, just about every successful person in the world has one thing in common: they are constantly reading and educating themselves on a daily basis.

Jim Rohn, the great self development speaker, said,

“Formal education will make you a living. Self-education will make you a fortune.”

Albert Einstein, the genius, said,

“Once you stop learning, you start dying.”

Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest presidents in US history, said,

“I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.”

All of these quotes from extremely successful and wise individuals say the same thing. You have to keep improving yourself on a daily basis. You have to keep acquiring knowledge and improving your skills.

Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and knew the value of constantly becoming more knowledgeable.

He authored the first American book on personal finance, ‘The Way to Wealth’, which is still considered by many to be the best and wisest money book ever written. Originally published in 1758 as the preface to ‘Poor Richard’s Almanack’, this little gem has been through innumerable printings and sold millions of copies to those in search of smart but entertaining advice about hard work, earning and saving money and debt.

Franklin concludes that, you should always be educating yourself through books and your education should be a work in progress until the day you die.

The investment you make in yourself will always pay off in the end. The wiser you are, the better decisions you’ll make. The smarter you are, the more things you can be successful at.

I make it a point to always try keep improving myself each day by learning new things.

I try to read daily for at least 30 minutes, study other successful people I look up to and listen to podcasts, interviews and read biographies to learn as much as I can about how to get better at what I am doing.

Because of my injury I have been learning everything I can on tendonitis in the hip flexor, Piriformis syndrome, Sciatica and how to manage the early onset of Osteoarthritis. Every time I have a session with my physiotherapist I see it as an opportunity to learn more, when I get home I read up on what I have learnt and try and give myself as much knowledge as possible to add to everything I have learnt about my own body through a lifetime of playing sport, dancing, personal training and yoga, because at the end of the day as much as I respect all the experts, no-one knows my body better than me.

For the management of the Osteoarthritis in my hips I have been reading that Ashtanga and my own style of Vinyasana or free flowing yoga, might not be as effective as Iyengar yoga for my problem, so I have begun rereading ‘Light on Yoga’ by B.K.S Iyengar, which I first read as part of my yoga teacher training in India 10 years ago.

‘Light on Yoga’ is considered as the definitive guide to the philosophy and practice of Yoga written by one of it’s greatest ever teachers alongside Sri K Pattabhi Jois the founder of Ashtanga yoga.

In 1934, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar, both still young men, were students of the fearsome and soon to be legendary yogi T. Krishnamacharya.

The young boys learned yoga from Krishnamacharya, who was himself under the patronage of the Maharaja. While Pattabhi Jois was destined to remain in Mysore, and Krishnamacharya to eventually move to Madras in 1954, the young Sundaraja Iyengar was sent to Pune, in Central India in 1934 with little or no resources other than the command from his guru to go teach. He stayed there teaching and practicing, while in Mysore Pattabhi Jois attended the Sanskrit University, continued his yoga practice and eventually took a teaching position at the Sanskrit University.

The two guru brothers did not meet again until 1940. Although little is remembered by the two men about this meeting, they recall that it was during one of Krishnamcharya’s yoga propagation tours- the venerable yogi had come to Pune with Pattabhi Jois, to visit a nearby Swami Kuvalayananda and his Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute. The two men stayed at Iyengar’s house for a short time. They did not meet again until 2005 sixty five years after their last meeting. Pattabhi Jois had just celebrated his ninetieth birthday; Iyengar had reached his eighty-seventh year.

These two legendary gurus are the founders of modern day yoga, but as far as Pattabhi Jois and Mr. Iyengar were concerned, they were just old yoga brothers seeing each other after a very long time:

Iyengar remarked,

“1934 together, 2005 together. I think that’s important and a rare privilege,”

Differences in practice, styles, philosophies and opinions always exist- these are but peripheral concerns. The message of knowledge, mutual respect and friendship lies at the heart of the great Indian traditions, and in the hearts of these two revered men.

Since first reading ‘Light on Yoga’ I have practiced yoga and meditation everyday for the last 10 years.

I find the practicing of yoga everyday really helps me in all aspects of my life.

The more I practice the stronger my breathing becomes and the more control of it I have and the calmer I have become.

The better I fuel my body the better I feel both mentally and physically.

The yoga poses and breathing teach me that if I control my breath I can control my mind. The pain and discomfort I feel in the awkward yoga poses, will go away if I breathe and stay calm. This mirrors situations in life which can seem impossible with no way out, but if you stay calm, focused and breathe then your head clears, the situation does not seem as bad as you first thought and you can see a way forward.

Yoga has taught me to focus my mind and not be distracted by outdoor forces and things that I cannot control.

I have also learnt that I cannot do all the poses or asana, but this is not failure, the point of yoga is not to be able to do all the poses, it is the daily process of trying to achieve them that is important. Because as soon as you have mastered a difficult pose, you will come across another one that you will feel is impossible, when you first start, but if you practice every day it will become a little bit easier as you improve every day.
