Dancer’s need to eat like athletes, you do not want to carry any excess weight on your body because it makes everything a lot harder, jumping, turning, lifting etc carrying any extra pounds, but you are always struggling to eat enough calories compared to the amount you are burning.

This time of year for a dancer and model means it’s Clothes Show Live at the NEC in Birmingham and it’s good to see my good friend Andy Turner still going strong choreographing and creating spectacular shows on the main stage.

Andy and I used to dance together and then shared offices together in Oxford Street, before moving to an amazing warehouse space in Wapping at Metropolitan Wharf overlooking the River Thames. We had a large dance studio, gym, office space and kitchen on the ground floor and a recording studio, bedrooms and lounge on the Mezzanine. It was a real creative hub and we had some amazing parties there.

When I was a professional dancer we used to have to do between 6 and 14 high intensity shows a day for a week at the Clothes Show Live at Birmingham Exhibition Centre every December and I had some great memories of the ten or so years I spent there, performing, choreographing and partying year after year.

It seemed like every professional dancer and model in the country was all in the same place at the same time, just before Christmas ready to perform and party. Most of the time I was sharing with my great friend Jimmy Barba.

The tales of Jimmy and I sharing a room for years on jobs are legendary and we could probably write a book on the times we had together,

But try as I might I just could not eat enough food to balance my energy expenditure, so I would lose a lot of weight, muscle bulk and would feel fatigued. I decided to use a carbohydrate, protein supplement that also included vitamins and minerals and found this provided a practical solution to the problem.

I truly believe to be a top class dancer you have to be more disciplined and dedicated than any other profession in the art or sports world. It is relentless, the toll on the body, the learning, the practicing, the auditioning the rehearsing and finally the performing.

When you are working as a professional dancer, you are literally dancing all day. Most everyday people go to work from nine to five and sit down at a desk in front of a computer all day. A dancer rehearses in a dance studio from ten until six everyday and they may be performing a show at night somewhere else.

Athletes do not train for as many hours as dancers dance everyday. So the amount of calories a dancer needs to consume is huge. But at the same time there is an occupational and aesthetic pressure to remain really slim, especially for the girls but the males as well. No one employs or wants to see an overweight dancer on stage and if you are a male dancer having to do a pas de deux with a girl with all the technically difficult and physically demanding lifts no one wants to have to work with a partner who is carrying any extra weight.

This means it is even more important for a dancer to eat a balanced diet with lots of carbohydrates, protein, good fats, minerals, vitamins and plenty of water than an average person. The balanced diet should be the same you just have to have more of everything.
