“Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.”

Good morning peeps, meditation done.

Quote for the Day:

“Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.”

Bernice J. Reagon

Sciatica is the name given to any sort of pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet.

The pain of sciatica is usually felt in the buttocks and legs.

When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, it can cause:

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • A tingling sensation that radiates from your lower back and travels down one of your legs to your foot and toes
  • Weakness in the calf muscles or the muscles that move the foot and ankle

The pain can range from being mild to very painful, and may be made worse by sneezing, coughing or sitting for a long period of time.

While people with sciatica can also have general back pain, the pain associated with sciatica usually affects the buttocks and legs much more than the back.

Most cases of sciatica pass in around six weeks without the need for treatment.

In my own case the sciatica has been caused by an injury in my hip flexor (Psoas Major) and two in my buttock the Gluteus Maximus and the Piriformis, which sits under your sitting bone.

Working backwards with my physiotherapist we worked out that my hip flexor injury started in February and got gradually worse and worse as I continued to work with the injury. By the time it got to October, which was the first time my leg actually gave way and a shooting pain went all the way down my leg from my buttock to my foot, it had been progressively getting worst for eight months. So I have found myself in the situation now where at times I am literally paralysed by the shooting pain.

The physiotherapist has explained to me that I now have to undo eight month worth of damage to my muscles, which is not going to be a 2-minute job. I have been signed off from work with Chelsea until the end of the year and have postponed my yoga retreat in Morocco at the five — star luxurious Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort from the 10th to 17th of December until March 18th to the 25th.

I have been recovering in the Highlands for three weeks now and it has provided an excellent opportunity to take the time out to really plan and think about what I am doing, what I want to be doing and who I really am.

This week I will finish writing my latest book ‘How to be Fit@Fifty’, which is designed for men and women approaching 40 up to the age of 60 and beyond.

You cannot train in the same way as you did a few years back as your body and joints cannot take the impact and don’t I know it.

Neither does your body process food at the same rate as it once did, making it easier to put on excess weight, which in turn takes longer to shift.

Your training, eating and drinking habits will therefore need to change, which I am continuously discovering and recording.

I have used my time off to finish off two business plans one for London and one for a 3,000 acre country estate, which have cross over synergy and I am now thinking through my plans for the New Year when I have fully recovered form my injury.

In the meantime I will continue my daily recovery program of restorative yoga, meditation, reading, writing, walking the dogs, working out my upper body and stretching.

Remember any challenges that are put in your way are just there to help you discover who you really are.

Have a marvellous Monday peeps and a wonderful week
