I spent the weekend up in Cromarty in the Highlands looking after my mother’s house, the dogs and cats whilst she was down in Sussex going to two parties! One a 70th Birthday and one a Diamond wedding Anniversary, 60 years married to the same person is a remarkable feat for so many different reasons.

I literally could not stop sleeping for the 4 days I was at my mum’s house as I realised how tired my body and mind was after a particularly busy few months in London, where for one reason or another I have not been getting as much sleep as I know I need. 5 hours a night definitely does not cut it, even if we think we can get by on this, it has been scientifically proved time and time again that we need 8 hours a nights sleep to function to optimum effect.

8 hours a night or every 24 hours to be more accurate as getting 6 hours a night and 2 hours in the afternoon as on the continent or throughout the day works the same way as 8 hours in one sitting for the body and mind to rest, repair and recuperate enough for us to function to our maximum potential.

At my mum’s house in Cromarty is where I sleep best, it is so quiet, peaceful and tranquil I sleep with the curtains and window’s open to the soothing sound of mother nature and the sea coming onto the shore.

Being outside in the country air I fall asleep early and wake up in the morning to the beautiful sunset and the sound of the birds singing harmoniously. I wake up with a smile as I look out the window and see the beautiful view of the sky meeting the sea and the snow tipped mountains in the distance.

After walking the dogs in the hills and having a hearty lunch I fall asleep in the afternoon and it is the same at night after dinner. It is as if my body and mind are in tune with nature and I get the rest the universe intended us to.

The problem I have and so many of us have is recreating this healthy sleep pattern and lifestyle for our body, mind and health, where we are busy haring around the city, chasing after our tail, working every hour under the sun.

If you value your health this is something that needs to be changed and I am speaking to myself as much as I am speaking to you.

To have a healthy, body and mind we need to get enough sleep.
