If people would actually USE a $5 lock, that would be great — but the large number of children who shoot or get shot by accident suggests that a large fraction of gun owners are too dumb to do that. So a gun that’s locked by default (whether the owner remembers to do that or not), would be a better solution. Also, if you’re concerned about the time it takes for a smartgun to scan your fingerprint — shouldn’t you be concerned by the time it takes to go find the key and unlock the gun?

I demand a degree of consistency of thought processes here!
