Slow Down, See the Beauty

Sometimes we just need to slow the fuck down.

I know I do.

I spend a lot of time, especially this time of year — the summer — running around, working on projects, doing yardwork, vacationing (rarely), throwing dinner parties, hanging out with neighbors, and all of that is cool. I love it.

But sometimes, it’s just too much. It’s exhausting after awhile.

So we need to slow down.

I was watching a video today, of a lecture by Ajahn Brahm, called ‘How to Be Positive’, and his main point, or thesis, was that it’s hard to be positive when you’re rushing around everywhere, looking at the world through the blur of you car window, jamming your food down your throat so you can make it to that business meeting, or soccer game, or whatever the fuck.

Brahm suggested that the reason we can’t see the beauty that’s all around us, is that we don’t take the time for our eyes to even register it, before it’s gone in a blur. The same goes for all our other senses. Everything begins to look the same, to run together into a gray morass of negativity, after awhile.

So, it’s good to stop, often, to actually take the time to look around us and see the beautiful things in our world, to taste the food, the bourbon, to hear the music, the sounds of nature and the hum of our modern world, and find the beauty within.

Well, there’s my quick thought for the day.

See y’all tomorrow!
