The term “blue-eyed soul” dates back to the ’60s. It means R&B-style music created by white people, not necessarily with blue eyes.

The first blue-eyed soul song is considered the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” which hit №1 in 1965. A few years earlier they named an album, Some Blue-Eyed Soul.

In the ’50s, white artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins sprinkled rock & roll with R&B. Along with Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley and other black performers, they created rock & roll by combining R&B and country music.

Here’s a list of 15 of the top blue-eyed soul songs of all time:

  1. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” — the Righteous Brothers; №1, 1965

Written by Phil Spector, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” was one of the two №1 hits scored by the “Righteous Brothers” — California natives Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. Their other №1 was “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration,” also in 1965.
