One really needs to know the proper title. “dr” is a lower status than “Prof.” Call someone “Prof” when they’re only “dr” (or the intermediate “dr hab.”, and you’ll cause some embarrassment by, essentially, promoting them one or two levels. Call someone “dr” when they’re “Prof.”, and you’re demoting them.
