I taught college from 1976 to 2012. Pretty much all that time, enrollment was 60–40 female. I often wondered what all the males were doing. Some went into the military or trade school (a good choice for people who want to do that kind of work). Some may be selection bias. Comparatively few women become welders or plumbers, meaning they’re more likely to seek advancement in fields that reward college. But even so, I have my doubts those factors can explain the disparity.

Where I live, there are lots of blue collar workers and first-generation college students, so I don’t think the “man-child” syndrome is too deeply entrenched here. Nevertheless, females way outnumber men in college all across the country. I shudder to think that lots of males look like the guy in your lead photo.
